New York Chamber Brass was founded as a faculty Ensemble-in-Residence at the Conservatory of Music Purchase College, State University of New York. Drawing together an eclectic and classy mix of New Yorkís most distinguished brass players, the members - Graham Ashton & Rich Clymer (trumpets), Peter Reit (horn), Tim Albright (trombone), and Kyle Turner (tuba), are committed to a single artistic vision to promote quality brass chamber music of our time through innovative performances and recordings.
NYCBís repertoire is compellingly diverse, encompassing all the significant quintets specifically written for brass from the 1950s to the present day, from the lyrical quintets of Malcolm Arnold, Charles Collier Jones and Michel Leclerc, to the more complex and virtuosic works of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Luciano Berio and Alvin Etler. The ensemble currently has over 30 works in their repertoire. Upcoming seasons also feature cross-genre collaborations with exhibitions at the Nueberger Museum, together with performances of Elgar Howarthís theatrical work Brass Belles for soprano and brass quintet, Tim Sousterís humorous Rabbit Heaven for brass, percussion and sound effects, and Graham Ashtonís score for G.W.Pabstís 1925 silent movie Secrets of a Soul, based on Freudian interpretations of dreams.
Integral to NYCBís performance schedule is an education program sponsored in part by Rayburn Music and based at Purchase College State University of New York. Each season, hundreds of school students from New York State, New Jersey and Connecticut hear New York Chamber Brass in seminars, workshops and concerts. The education program is closely linked to a weekly Brass Chamber Music Seminar at Purchase College, which is open to all students and the surrounding communities - admission is free.
In fall 2009, NYCB initiated a Composer-in-Residence program for an emerging talented graduate composition student at Purchase College. Each season, a young composer works closely with NYCB for the fall semester before producing a new work premiered by the ensemble at the end of the spring semester. The studentís works are added to NYCBís repertoire and performed at subsequent concerts.
In addition to their performances in the Conservatory of Music Purchase College, New York Chamber Brass give regular performances at the Neuberger Museum, Guggenheim Museum, La Guardia High School for the Arts, Merkin Hall, and the National Cathedral, Washington DC. International tours for 2009 - 2011, include performances in Hong Kong, UK, France, Germany and South America.
